A Quick Trip Back Home

I will be in the UK in December, arriving (early) on the fifth and leaving (late) on the twelfth. That’s just under a week, so I will probably be limited to staying in London and (maybe) going up to Manchester and/or Oxford. I’m travelling on my own - Tommy and Hannah will stay in Kisumu. The reason I’m coming is that I have to leave Kenya due to visa restrictions. Also, its proving rather tricky to sort out some of our finances from here, so this is a chance to get on top of some nagging issues. Post a comment here if you want to see me. I think I’ll be based at Paul’s house in N19 for most of my stay, but I’m flexible. I’d like to catch up with as many people as possible, but it may be be tricky to do so…

Wanna buy a puppy?

Puppy

This puppy is just one in a series of seven first editions currently in our household. The puppies are available in two 2-tone colours; black & tan or chocolate & tan. They are about 2 months old and will be getting their shots in the next few days. They are Rottweiler/Doberman crosses and the owner (they do not belong to us) wants $100 per pup. At least five are earmarked for sale already, leaving 2 without homes so far (our vet is looking for homes for them too, so there is a chance they all have homes already). They will not be leaving their mother until they reach 3 months - which is around late October.

If you’re interested, leave a comment (with a working email address) and we’ll get back to you. Mind you, you’ll probably need to be in the Kisumu area if you want to actually see one up close.

TelkomADSL is a Joke

An ancient relic

And I’ve had enough of it. As previously mentioned on this site, TelkomADSL put their entry level prices up by 67%. Despite of my impotent fury over the matter - and perhaps because I must be certifiably insane - we forked out the extra shillings and this month paid KSh9188 for same service we used to have.

The service has been shockingly bad. Despite the fact that a large number of users in Kisumu, including probably the most popular internet café in town, stopped using the service due to instability and the price hike, the service has actually managed to get worse.

No News Here? Try Elsewhere

You may have noticed that I’m not updating here very often at present. One of the reasons for this is that I’m spending an increasing amount of my time posting on OLPC News.

By complete coincidence, the originator of that site and I have a friend in common - Sabina Behague. Via the wonders of social blogging tools, he found a post of mine about OLPC- Technorati, I think -and we posted on each other’s sites expressing concerns about the One Laptop per Child initiative…

…well, now I’m doing my thing for the OLPC News cause by posting there a few times a week. This will allow me not to clog up this site with stuff the majority of my friends and family are not really bothered about. It also gives me something non-Tommy related to do!
As to why Hannah isn’t posting here much, let me just say she spends four days a week in the field and fills about two exercise books a week with field notes. She then spends two whole days a week typing them up. Hopefully, Hannah will be able to put something up about her work soon, however, doing so has ethical implications that have yet to be resolved (readers are not supposed to know where the work is based or who it’s talking about).

It looks likely anyone interested will have to wait until her thesis is published in 2008/9 (unless I can convince her to set up an anonymous blog on wordpress.com).

Tunaendalea Vizuri

Tommy Soaking Wet

We’re doing well (at least, I hope that’s what the title says). Yesterday we all went out to Kiboko Bay, a nice hotel/restaurant/resort on the shores of Lake Victoria in Dunga, just west of Kisumu. Not having a car, we travelled there by boda-boda. This is usually fine, but after 30 minutes each way on the back of a bike in blazing sunshine, the merits of cars and air conditioners become crystal clear. Hannah and I are rather pinker than usual! Tommy had great fun, as you can see from the photos at the end of this post. Unfortunately, he got a bit previous and just before we set off, he and Omundi jumped into the paddling pool we left out over night (see photo above).
