Have you ever had one of those moments where…

Untitled - Matej Andraz Vogrincic 2006

Well, initially, the lead in text here was going to read “where the ground opens up and makes you vanish”, however, due to me possibly being a bit too smart for my own good, it probably now should read:

“Have you ever had one of those moments where you actually knew where the nearest internet cafe was before you promised to do something that needs the internet”

What am I on about? Well, if I got my punctuation right on the sheet of paper I left on a desk at The Tea Factory, Liverpool, at least three people reading this should know exactly. For anyone else passing by, this post is in response to the final task set by the panel interviewing candidates for the position of Digital Content and Communications Coordinator with Liverpool Biennial.

At the end of the interview, I was asked to editorialise the interview process in the form of a blog post. I was then presented with a piece of paper on which to write. I’ve never written a blog post with pen and paper before and felt it would be difficult to complete the task satisfactorily. Should I be creative - write a Haiku? A limerick? Should I be cryptic – turn the sheet into a paper model? A plane? All these ideas came to me, but not a blog post. Not on paper. With a pen.

Tommy explains Starfall ABCs

Hannah isn’t very well, so I have been trying to keep a very bored Tommy occupied. He’s really missing school and we haven’t managed to get him in to one in the UK as yet (hell, we don’t even have our own home back yet, so perhaps this is to be expected).

Today, we visited Tommy’s favourite educational website, Starfall and he ran through nearly the whole ABC section all by himself. Very clever, I thought…

Coming Home

Beach Combing

Well, it’s nearly time to go home. For those I haven’t got around to calling or emailing yet, I’m due back in the UK on 1st April with Hannah and Tommy to follow on the 28th of April.

We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone once we get back and will start getting round to visiting by the middle of May. We’ll be based in London for at least a month while I find work, then we will probably move back to Manchester (or, hopefully, somewhere just outside Manchester + garden…)

There is much we have been up to here since the last post all those months ago, including a trip to Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. I have uploaded a good few pictures of this trip to Flickr today. Have a look at the images over to the right here on the blog, or click this link. Here’s a quick Tommy pic for starters though.

Tommy Close up

We’ve really passed on blogging of late firstly due to the insane costs we were shelling out for ADSL (now well and truely ditched) and the due to the difficulty in connecting via GPRS at home. I actually had a post written and ready to go a week or so back, then dropped my pen drive on the way to the Internet cafe to post it…

Suffice it to say, stay tuned. There will be a lot more information here soon about what we’ve been up to. Indeed, Hannah will actually have to start posting after the 31st of March, because I’ll be checking here very day for updates on life in Kisumu.

Tommy is not so happy about returning to the UK. He has made it clear that although it’s fine for us to go to the UK and visit, we must come home afterwards. Home for him means Kisumu, Omundi, Lillian and Kisumu International School.

It’s going to be quite a change for him - and for all of us.

Tommy's Third Birthday!

Tommy's Birthday Cake

Tommy turned three on Sunday and it has taken a while for us to get around to posting about it - Sorry! We had a little party for his friends, but seeing as it came the day after a grown up’s Halloween Party, the mood among the adult attendants was, erm, ’subdued’. The kids had a great time though, playing games, drowning in cake and dipping into the paddling pool.

Wanna buy a puppy?

Puppy

This puppy is just one in a series of seven first editions currently in our household. The puppies are available in two 2-tone colours; black & tan or chocolate & tan. They are about 2 months old and will be getting their shots in the next few days. They are Rottweiler/Doberman crosses and the owner (they do not belong to us) wants $100 per pup. At least five are earmarked for sale already, leaving 2 without homes so far (our vet is looking for homes for them too, so there is a chance they all have homes already). They will not be leaving their mother until they reach 3 months - which is around late October.

If you’re interested, leave a comment (with a working email address) and we’ll get back to you. Mind you, you’ll probably need to be in the Kisumu area if you want to actually see one up close.
