A party at Tedman's

On Saturday evening, we went to our friend Tedman’s house for a party. Tedman works for the British Council and we have been friends since I waltzed into his offices in Kisumu and asked why the British Council were moving out. Our first meeting somehow ended up with him inviting me to a Rotarian meeting and our friendship developed. Suffice it to say, Tedman is a very kind and generous friend and the party we attended was organised by him for two British friends of his who were over on holiday celebrating their 27th wedding anniversary. At this point, I’d usually insert a phot of the evening, however, all the pictures I took were… well crap really. The only passable one is of Tommy standing with Tedman’s sons.

10,000 Kenyans read “The Register”

So, as you might have guessed from my earlier post about ADSL price hikes here in Kenya, I was mightily aggrieved at the time. I decided to send a version of my blog post to The Register to see if they were interested in the story. As it happens, they weren’t particularly, but they did get back to me with the following email:

Hello David.

Apologies for taking so long to get back to you.

Your tip is interesting, but I don’t think it is / was newsworthy for readers outside your country.

FYI we have approx. 4m readers a month - 75 per cent in US, UK and Canada. Around 10K readers a month hail from Kenya.

Best wishes

The Register

It’s interesting to know that so many Kenyans read this technology website. I was quite impressed by this figure.

Brakfast

Tommy and Omundi enjoying their breakfast. Omundi refuses regular uji (made with maize) now, and demands porridge oats every morning. As you can see, it goes down a treat!

Mobile Internet Unit available for sale

It has been a while since I really thought about my idea to create a mobile computing classroom and I spent a bit of time online today and actually found a mobile computer lab for sale in the US.

Months have passed since I talked here about my mobile internet unit (MIU) idea, so I thought I’d update you a bit. As yet, the plans remain… plans. I contacted a number of people who were involved in a similar project in Malaysia and they have been keen to encourage me to look at the idea further. I still haven’t been able to fully cost how much a unit would cost and so today I set about searching the web for more information to help me get a bit closer to a final figure. The other day in town, I saw a huge truck that was being used as a mobile phone shop. I’m trying to get hold of the owner of the business to have a chat about it, but to no avail. I can’t seem to track him down. I’ll try and get a pic of the truck soon though as its exactly what I imagined the MIU would look like and I’m keen for others to see it.
